Earlier this week, a Southwest Airlines flight approaching Oklahoma City startled residents as it dipped to a dangerously low altitude. Thankfully, the incident did not result in any injuries, but it has raised concerns about potential safety issues.

According to reports, the Boeing 737 aircraft descended to roughly 525 feet above ground level while still several miles from Will Rogers World Airport. This triggered an automatic low-altitude warning from the plane's systems, prompting air traffic control to contact the pilots and inquire about their status.
Thankfully, the pilots acknowledged the issue and initiated a go-around maneuver, safely climbing to a higher altitude. Air traffic control then instructed them to maintain a safe altitude of 3,000 feet until cleared for landing.
The cause of the unexpected descent is currently under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). There has been no official statement from Southwest Airlines regarding the incident.
This event comes just a few months after another Southwest aircraft flying into Lihue Airport, Hawaii dipped much closer to the ocean than usual during its approach.
While the exact reasons behind these incidents remain unclear, they highlight the importance of aviation safety protocols and the constant vigilance required from pilots and air traffic control.
What Happens During a Low Approach?
During normal landing procedures, aircraft maintain a safe altitude until they reach a designated point closer to the airport where they can begin their descent onto the runway. A low approach like this one deviates from this protocol, creating a number of safety concerns:
